Hawks win again

Hawks remain unbeaten after victory in Flin Flon

Sep 29, 2021 | 9:33 AM

The Nipawin Hawks diffused the Flin Flon Bombers Tuesday night skating away with a 4-1 win.

Nipawin has opened the 2021 – 22 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season with a trio of wins. Unlike the opening two games of the season where the Hawks grabbed an early lead, Flin Flon opened the scoring forcing Nipawin to claw back on the road at the Whitney Forum.

Flin Flon’s Cole Duperreault beat Chase Hamm just five minutes into the contest, but the visitors rebounded to take their own lead before the first period was over. Christian Albertson and Rylan Lefebvre each scored their first goals of the season giving Nipawin a 2-1 lead at the intermission.

Brody Wilson scored a power play goal in the second period expanding Nipawin’s cushion to 3-1. Carson Dobson added an empty net goal in the final minute of the third to round out the scoring. Lefebvre said the club is playing a strong team game early on this season.

“A lot of people in the SJHL thought our front end would be low because we don’t have a lot of experience. We are coming out here, doing our systems and it’s paying off,” he said.

Lefebvre’s goal was the winner, and his first career goal. The 19-year-old Leduc, Alta. product has had several chances for his first and is happy he now has the milestone.

“I got another breakaway, and I was like I got to score on this one,” he said after the game. “Somehow it went in, it was good.”

After allowing the opening goal Hamm was stellar making 30 stops for his third straight win.

The Hawks will get prepared to face the Melfort Mustangs this weekend in a home-and-home set starting on Friday in Nipawin.
