Mustangs looking to hand Hawks first loss of season

One of the most exciting rivalries in Junior A hockey is renewed on Friday as the Melfort Mustangs and Nipawin Hawks face off.

Melfort is coming off a big 5-3 win over the Yorkton Terriers on Tuesday, Sept. 28 and are now 2-1-0-0 early in the season. Assistant coach Trevor Logan said that win was big for confidence as they head into the weekend.

“We want to be at the top of this division and the top of the league,” he said. “And all these games are going to be tight and we know going into Nipawin that’s going to be a big test and we’re going to face those guys a lot of times.”

The rivals will play a total of 10 times this season.

The Hawks are 3-0-0-0 to start the season after wins over the La Ronge Ice Wolves, and Flin Flon Bombers. Logan said you’ve got to be ready for a tough battle against Nipawin.

“You’ve got to go in there and match their intensity when you go into their barn,” Logan said. “And at home we’ve got to feed off the crowd at home and really push the pace.”

You can hear Friday night’s contest in Nipawin on 105CJVR with Mat Barrett and the pre-game show starting at 7:15 p.m., puck drop is 7:30 p.m.
