Mustangs Fall to Hawks

Mustangs dominate shot clock, but fall to Hawks in shootout

Oct 2, 2021 | 8:57 AM

It wouldn’t be a Melfort Mustangs, Nipawin Hawks game without the dramatics that were seen on Friday, Oct. 1.

The first of ten meetings between the clubs seemed to have it all, physicality, controversy, tremendous goaltending, some greasy goals, and of course extra time.

Ultimately it was the Hawks who took this meeting by a 3-2 score in a shootout.

Mustangs assistant coach Trevor Logan said while the result wasn’t what they wanted, the effort was there, and he thinks they deserved a better fate.

“I thought we had a lot of opportunities that just don’t somehow find a way to go into the net, and bouncing pucks at times don’t go our way,” he said. “Eventually those are going to come our way if we keep working hard like this, it will work out.”

Former Mustang Christian Albertson scored on the powerplay in the first period to put the Hawks up 1-0 against his former team after one period.

That was answered halfway through the second by Damon Byers as he scored his first goal as a Mustang to tie things up. Seth McCulloch scored with about four minutes to play in the third, putting the Mustangs ahead, but it didn’t last long. Albertson would bite his former team once again with about 2 minutes to play.

That forced overtime, which didn’t solve anything, so a shootout it was.

Marco Lopez scored for Melfort and Andrew Schaab for Nipawin to open up the shootout. The next shooters both were stopped, but Carson Dobson wasn’t for the Hawks, meaning Ben Tkachuk needed to score, but the pad of Hawk goalie Dylan Lacroix stopped him.

Lacroix stopped 36 of 38 shots in the game for the Hawks and Logan said they need to do a bit of a better job knocking home the garbage in front, but they’ll take the effort and look for a win on Saturday.

“It would’ve been nice to get another point, but we’ll try our best to get three out of the weekend and be happy with that,” Logan said.

The teams meet in Melfort on Saturday night.
