Melfort Fire Department responds to barn fire on Tuesday

Oct 7, 2021 | 11:19 AM

A barn north of Melfort was lost to fire on Tuesday night.

The Melfort Fire Department responded to the fire six miles outside of the city just before 6:30 p.m. When crews arrived at the scene, they found the barn along with surrounding trees and grass engulfed in the blaze.

The forward edge of the fire was the main priority for crews to prevent it from spreading to the nearby yard sites until it was completely extinguished.

No injuries were reported in the barn fire.

Melfort Fire Cief Shaun Stewart told northeastNOW there is no indication at this time as to what caused the fire.

“The barn was abandoned at the time of the fire so no animals were in it,” Stewart said.

Stewart did have some tips for the public to keep in mind, especially during the very dry conditions that are being experienced around the province.

“If people are going to be enjoying a bonfire, make sure to have an extinguishing source nearby such as a garden hose or fire extinguisher in case it starts another fire,” Stewart said.

Any rural residents that are planning any controlled burns to any fields, stubble piles, etc, should check the weather forecast for wind speeds and direction according to Stewart.

“Check not only at the time they plan to light a fire but also what will take place two, four, and six hours later,” Stewart said.

Calling the provincial burn line is also recommended to ensure that all requirements are being met for a controlled burn. The provincial burn line can be reached by calling 1-866-404-4911. More details on controlled burns can also be found at on the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency Website.
