How vaccine passports have affected local businesses

Oct 8, 2021 | 12:00 PM

Following the implementation of vaccine passports, local businesses report aggressive behavior, decreased attendance, and an outpouring of support from some members of the community.

As of Oct. 1, members of the public need to show proof of vaccination or a negative result for COVID-19 within 72 hours of attendance to indoor public spaces.

Those affected by vaccine mandates are businesses and events that take place indoors such as nightclubs, bars, restaurants, gyms, sporting events, and other non-essential services such as casinos, museums, movie theatres, and concert venues.

Brad Dodds, manager of Melfort Smitty’s, said he is trying to look on the bright side of the situation.

“We have had a few instances regarding aggressive customers. The good does outweigh the bad and we appreciate the kind words and motivation we receive from our customers,” Dodds told northeast NOW.

In addition to pushback, businesses have also noticed a slow down in foot traffic.

“Yes, we have noticed an initial downturn. Could be the initial shock, resistance or a combination of factors. We feel once people become adjusted to having to show papers, things should balance out over time,” Dodds said.

Despite being an essential service, the Marguerite Riel Centre’s director of operations, Joanne Yakowec, said that some events they are hosting require vaccinations or a negative COVID-19 test result.

The Marguerite Riel Centre will host a Truth and Reconciliation Learning Day at the Kerry Vickar Centre on Oct. 12.

“We had some that have had to cancel because maybe the people or group they are bringing haven’t had two vaccines,” Yakowec said.

Yakowec said residents in the City of Melfort have generally followed the new rules in place and reported only witnessing a small amount of resistance.

A complete list of the types of businesses that require proof of vaccinations is available on the Government of Saskatchewan website.
