Mustangs shut out Ice Wolves for fifth win in a row

Oct 10, 2021 | 9:59 AM

It was a trio of 20-year-olds leading the way on Saturday night for the Melfort Mustangs in their 2-0 win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

Netminder Steven Bacovsky shut the door in net, while Marco Lopez and Carter Anderson each scored for the Mustangs.

Lopez’s goal came on the powerplay after a shot from the point, and a few rebounds found their way to Lopez who cashed in for his third of the year, just eight minutes into the contest. Anderson’s marker was a similar one as a juicy rebound from a point shot found the stick of Anderson who put it past Ice Wolves goaltender Xavier Cannon. It was a couple of greasy, rebound goals for the Mustangs, and assistant coach Trevor Logan said the bounces seem to be finally going their way.

“We knew if we just kept working away and doing the right things, it would start to come our way for sure,” he said.

Bacovsky made 33 saves in net for Melfort for his first shutout of the SJHL season.

“Steven was excellent,” Logan said. “A lot of times he kept us in this game tonight and that was exactly what we needed.”

The win is the Mustangs fifth win in a row, helping improve their league-best record to 7-1-0-1.

They’re back at it on Wednesday, Oct. 13 against the Battlefords North Stars at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.
