Hawks back in the Cage

Hawks host Flin Flon to start busy week

Oct 12, 2021 | 12:58 PM

After five days off the Nipawin Hawks are set to hit the ice again tonight (Tuesday) when the Flin Flon Bombers visit the Centennial Arena.

The Hawks are sitting with a record of 5-2 after seven games and are third in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Sher-Wood Division, two points behind the Bombers.

Head Coach Doug Johnson said he’s glad the team had a break after a busy start to the season but he’s ready for a week that features four games.

“I am looking forward to it,” Johnson told northeastNOW. “We had a couple days off to give the guys some rest because we played a lot of games early. As mentioned, a couple days off but we had three really good days of practice. I really like the way the guys are moving and competing. It just seems like there’s more precision to their game, more purpose to their game so I’m looking forward to seeing how this week treats us.”

The Hawks will meet Flin Flon for the second time this year. Back on Sept. 28, they diffused the Bombers 4-1 at the Whitney Forum.

Johnson said he expects a better effort from the Bombers but overall, their game plan isn’t his concern.

“I think you expect the best out of everybody when you play them, if you expect the worst it never goes well. If we’re worried about what Flin Flon is doing we’re already in trouble. We are aware of what their tendencies are but at the end of the day we must show up. If you look at the games we lost it hasn’t been the opposition beating us, it’s us beating ourselves because of lack of effort or brain farts, or not playing the game we can or are able to,” Johnson said.

Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. COVID guidelines are still in effect meaning proof of double vaccination or a negative test will need to be provided. The doors will open at 6:00 p.m.

Nipawin will travel to southern Saskatchewan this coming weekend with games in Weyburn, Estevan, and Notre Dame on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
