Melfort Communities in Bloom receives national award for community appearance

Melfort Communities in Bloom (CiB) has been awarded an outstanding achievement award for community appearance through the national CiB program.

Programs like fall and spring clean-up and curbside collection helped with keeping up the appearance of the community but credit is also given to new welcoming signs.

Peggy George with Melfort CiB told northeastNOW the addition of a welcome sign this year was a contributing factor to winning the award.

“When you drive into town those welcoming signs are what the judges are looking for so we highlighted what we have done on Highway 6 north, that being the iconic elevator,” George said. “They [judges] thought that was pretty special.”

The national program as well as the awards ceremony was virtual again this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is such a fabulous program and we wanted to continue to be part of it,” George said.

CiB volunteers have been working on theme changes at Memorial Garden and at the antique truck on Saskatchewan Ave.

Lights and arbor went up on the fence at Memorial Gardens last week.

“Some of these things are harder to do in -30, in the snow and the wind is blowing so they aren’t really noticeable, so we sneak them up when the weather is still nice,” George said. “It was time to say goodbye to the flowers, they were starting to look worn out and tired looking and it is October, so it is time to change the season.”

The antique truck on Saskatchewan Ave. was another new addition to the community this spring. The new fall theme on the truck also doubles as a back drop for fall picture opportunities.

Melfort CiB hosted their first fall festival in September and is sure to be a wonderful addition to the community calendar, George said.

“I think it will be even better next year but all of the kids that came out had fun decorating their pumpkins and the vendors that were there enjoy it as well,” George said. “It was a relaxing, kind of old-fashioned country afternoon and was just a special time.”

George said the group is looking forward to next summer and are hopeful that judges can physically come to Melfort again.

“We want to see people again and have our work bees again like we used to,” George said.
