Hawks grounded in Weyburn

Oct 16, 2021 | 7:55 AM

The Nipawin Hawks were doubled 4-2 in Weyburn Friday as the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club opened a three-game road trip.

The Red Wings got goals from Austyn Hansen and Nipawin product Davis Chorney in the first period, Dante Ballerin and Simon Pollock advanced Weyburn’s lead to 4-0 after two periods.

Nipawin responded in the third period with a pair of goals from Joel Mabin and Andrew Schaab. Mabin’s goal was his first career SJHL tally. He said after the game that the team won’t have much success going down in games early.

“It sucks coming out slow at the start and getting down 2-0 in the first and then 4-0 going into the third period, it’s tough for energy. The boys battled back in the third and started coming back” he said.

At the 16-minute mark of the second period the Hawks had just 13 shots against Joseph Young in the Weyburn net. Nipawin finished with 29 on goal. Mabin was able to punch through busting the 2018 rookie of the year’s shutout bid. The Lethbridge product said it feels great to get into the goal column.

“It feels like the monkey is off my back, finally after eight games. I have to get it going now,” he added.

Chaser Hamm suffered the loss in net, he made 17 saves in two periods of action. Dylan Lacroix came in in relief and made four saves in the final period.

Nipawin will now get set for a showdown with the Estevan Bruins on Saturday. Faceoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. You can hear the game on Saskatchewan’s New Beach Radio beginning at 7:15 p.m.
