Bacovksy shuts door on Red Wings to help Mustangs to perfect southern swing

From the word “go” on Saturday in Weyburn, it felt like the Melfort Mustangs were in complete control as they defeated the Red Wings 5-0.

It was the Mustangs second win in a row after a 5-4 win over Estevan just one night prior. Mustangs director of player personnel Rick Oakes filled in as assistant coach behind the bench, and said everyone was ready to go from the first minute.

“[Head Coach] Trevor [Blevins] had them pumped up and they were ready to go right off the hop,” Oakes said. “They had some good jump, lots of speed going through the neutral zone, and really put Weyburn back on their heels.”

Ben Tkachuk was the first one to get on the board for Melfort, just about eight minutes into the game, and the Mustangs didn’t look back.

Brayden Koch scored his first as a Mustang in the second period, followed by Curtis Hammond’s sixth of the season to make it 3-0 after two.

In the third, a few other Mustangs wanted to get in on the scoring as Ty Albrecht and Marco Lopez each scored.

Steven Bacovsky stopped 18 shots in the win for his second shutout of the season and second in as many starts.

“It was a great weekend,” Oakes said. “Anytime you can come down to Estevan and Weyburn and pick up four points, it’s a great weekend, and we haven’t done that for a while, so it’s a great feeling.”

Melfort improves to 9-2-0-1 on the year and remains in first place in the SJHL.

Melfort will have a bit of time off before getting back at it on Friday when they take on the Humboldt Broncos in a home-and-home series.
