Mustangs and Bruins live up to hype in Estevan
Friday saw what was arguably the Game of the Weekend in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) as the early-season-favorite Estevan Bruins battled the first-place Melfort Mustangs.
The Mustangs took the back and forth affair by a 5-4 score in a game that could have gone either way at any point in the contest. Mustangs head coach Trevor Blevins after their tough loss to Battlefords a few nights prior, and giving up a few tough goals in this contest, it was nice to see his team battle.
“Everyone responded at certain points in the game,” he said. “It was good to see the mental toughness of the group and battle through in a tough game and found a way to get two points.”
Estevan opened the scoring just a minute into the hockey game thanks to Cody Davis. However, Melfort responded with a pair of goals before the 10-minute mark. Alex Moar’s first, and Liam McInnis’ second gave the Mustangs a 2-1 lead. Mark Rumsey got the game back to all-square for Estevan just before the end of the stanza.
