Reel Attractions began showing the film Brotherhood with director Richard Bell in attendance.

Brotherhood began showing on Oct. 15 at Reel Attractions. The film’s director attended the screenings on Oct. 17 and Oct. 18.

Bell said that he hopes that people take away the message of togetherness.

“It sparkles more during COVID. Things have been falling apart for 19 months. In the beginning, we were all in this together but it started to fade after a couple of months,” Bell told northeastNOW. “Those boys in 1926, when they faced the storm there are only survivors because they came together.”

The movie is based on a true story about teenage boys attending a camp. Their canoe capsizes, and the group of boys must work together in order to survive.

“The movie is the survival story of this band of brothers holding on for dear life and trying to make it through until morning,” Bell said.

The film was co-produced by Saskatoon’s Karma Film, co-financed by Creative Saskatchewan, and was scored by William Rowson, a Saskatoon-born composer.

Brotherhood was built as a Saskatchewan Ontario co-production,” Bell said. “Usually co-production is with other countries but we found we were strongest coming together as two provinces.”

In 2020 the film received the Canadian Screen Award for Achievement in Visual Effects.

“I think as creators especially in Canada, the gift is really just people coming to see the movie. It’s so hard for Canadian film,” Bell said.

Although the story is about coming of age, it is intended to be enjoyed by all ages.

“We had a breadth of ages, young and old. High school kids came out and that was such a treat,” Bell said. “I always hoped young people would see it, especially young men since it’s called Brotherhood and is about brotherhood, boyhood, and manhood,” Bell said.
