Melfort’s Liliidae Home and Design back wall gets face lift

The mural on the back wall of Liliidae home and design in Melfort has progressed nicely over the fall but there is still work to be done.

Painting began in August for the design that was selected over a year ago in a back wall design contest.

Owner Julie Schmale told northeastNOW the wall is at a point where it looks as if it is completed but a few things will be added next year.

“There are black lines between the colours and the sky and if you look closely, you’ll notice that they have not been done on the bottom of the wall so in the grass and the road,” Schmale said. “Also, next year will be the finishing of the logo around the house, so the wheat sprigs in our logo will go around the window that has the house around it.”

The message, Greetings from Melfort will also be painted onto the left-hand side of the mural.

“It has been really fun to be out there painting and hearing people shout out their approval as they drive by or walk by,” Schmale said.

Prior to the white primer going on last year, the wall was a bit of an eyesore in the community according to Schmale.

“We actually forgot how ugly the wall used to be,” Schmale said. “All year we have looked at this nice, primed wall and then we looked at a picture of before and it was like, oh my goodness, I forgot it looked so ugly.”

The mural based on the Prairie Proud design submitted by Dean Armstrong will be completed by the Liliidae team next summer.

“We know that not everyone will love it and may not be everyone’s taste, but we do feel that the colours and the motif of it being the prairie sunset, we can all relate to it,” Schmale said. “We feel it will grow on people and no one will find it offensive.”

The Liliidae mural, as well as the poppy mural at the Melfort Legion, were new to the community this year. A mural on the south wall of Mel-City floral is another mural in the city.

Liliidae Home and Design is getting set for their Christmas market on Nov. 12 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

They picked a Friday for this year to have it as an evening event and get a more Christmas atmosphere, Schmale said.

“We’ve got some of our original vendors and some new ones so it will be a really nice evening,” Schmale said.

Liliidae’s own Christmas decor include smaller trees for side tables and shelves.

Mel-City Floral, BamWood Turnings, Wild Poppy Baking, Artisan Bread, are returning this year. New vendors include Louis Rose Leather, The Painted Postcard, Velvet Vittles dog treats, and Badlands Coffee.
