Trojans giving back in more ways than one

The Tisdale Trojans Hockey Club has been busy all week giving back to their community. This past week they volunteered with the local Tim Hortons and Co-op to serve the community that supports them.

They also donated $430 to the Salvation Army Food Bank after a successful tailgate party that saw them once again partner with the local Co-op. Co-op donated all their proceeds from the barbeque, while the Trojans donated the money raised from the retro jersey draw.

Pat Bladen, treasurer for the Tisdale Trojans Hockey Club said that this was the perfect opportunity for her team to give back to their community that is always so supportive of their team.

“Because we are a community-based hockey team, it gets them out and gets them exposed to people in the area. Most of these kids aren’t from around here and it’s just community service work.”

Bladen also recognized how important it truly is to give back, as this is now home for a lot of these kids and that they didn’t just come here to play hockey. They came to welcome the community in the exact same way that they were welcomed when they first arrived.

“It’s important that the fans know that the kids have adopted this place as their home. They want to support the community, they want to give back because they want people to recognize that they’re not just here as hockey players. Anything they can do in the community, they will do.”

Although the tailgate happened in late September and the donation presentation took until Oct. 20 to finally be handed out, according to Bladen the fundraiser was always planned to go to the Salvation Army and those who assisted were very eager from the get-go.

“When we approached the Co-op and Tim Hortons to see if they’d like to be involved, they were immediately all on board. When we work like this in the community, the funds aren’t raised for the hockey team, they’re raised to go back into the community.”

Bladen told northeastnow that the fundraiser served as sort of the kickoff for their season and it provided the community with a much easier way to meet the team.

“The boys are all there in their jerseys, the little kids can come out and walk up to them and get autographs signed if they want and then the boys can play games with the kids. It’s about a three-hour donation of community work on a Saturday afternoon. People come out, they visit, they talk and they learn who people are. It’s just a friendly, easier way to put a face to someone when you don’t have a hockey helmet on. The boys appreciate it too, it’s just a way for everyone to benefit; the community, the fans and the players.”

The Trojans have a double header against the Estevan Bears this weekend, starting at 7:30 P.M. on Saturday followed by a 2 P.M. game on Sunday. Both games will be held at the Tisdale Recplex Arena.
