Mustangs learning lesson after loss to Hounds

The Melfort Mustangs have now lost three games in a row in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

It was a 3-1 decision against the Notre Dame Hounds on Tuesday, Oct. 27 in Wilcox. However, while the scoreboard dictated two points for the opposing team, Mustangs assistant coach Trevor Logan said they had a good effort in the contest, especially in the third, but just couldn’t seem to get a break from the hockey gods.

He said after a tough weekend against Humboldt, confidence may have not been high at times.

“Just having a hard time getting pucks in the back of the net,” Logan said. “Not getting the bounces as we would hope. Again tonight that seemed to be a little bit of the case, bounces seemed to not be going our way. Probably get down a little bit and we just have to work through it and battle through it.”

Connor Nolan opened the scoring for the Hounds about halfway through the first, with his sixth of the season. That was followed by a late first period goal from Wyatt Day, his first career SJHL goal to make it a 1-1 hockey game after two.

The score stayed that way until the 5:21 mark of the third period when Dane Probe scored for the Hounds to give them the lead. Melfort had chances late, but could not seem to put one past Austin Elliott who stopped 24 of 25 in the contest for Notre Dame including 12 in the third period. Blake Rasmuson added an empty netter late for the Hounds to put the final dagger in the Mustangs.

Logan said they’re going to learn a lot about their team with the current adversity they’ve been going through.

“At the end of the day if you don’t get tested and face some adversity in the year, you’re not going to learn how to deal with it,” he said. “And that’s what you need to know going in at the end of the year.”

Melfort falls to 9-5-0-1 on the season, and are back in game action on Friday, Oct. 29 as they take on the Weyburn Red Wings. That will be followed by a Saturday, Oct. 30 meeting with the Battlefords North Stars. Both games are at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.
