Wadena Curling Club receives $5,000 from local seed companies

After a tough year for all sporting facilities, the Wadena RE/MAX Curling Club Board of Directors issued a bright welcome to start the season on the ice before the Quill Plains Premier League Oct. 27.

At this presentation, Northland Seeds gave a total of $5,000 to the Wadena RE/MAX Curling Club, matching their $2,500 donation provided by Canterra Seeds’ Rooted in the Prairies Project this year.

This money will be going towards some upgrades at the Curling Club thanks to Lee Johnson of Northland Seeds and the Rooted in the Prairies Project from Canterra Seeds.

“Nominating the Wadena RE/MAX Curling Club for the Rooted in the Prairies Project was an easy decision for me,” Johnson said. “In small-town Saskatchewan, the curling rink is often one of the pillars of the community and Wadena is no exception.”

When the pandemic shut down non-essential businesses last year, the curling club lost out on months of revenue, putting multiple building upgrades on hold, and preventing the Wadena community from congregating at the facility.

“The pictures on the Wall of Fame, the stories in the lounge during the annual Farmers & Friends Bonspiel and the full parking lots nearly every winter night all stem from decades of passionate club members, top quality ice makers and dedicated board members,” Johnson explained. “The board’s vision is not only to maintain the facility but to add features that will make it accessible and in good condition for years to come.”

Dane Ward, Wadena RE/MAX Curling Club President said he and the rest of his club are very appreciative of the donations and know how far it will go in recovering from last year’s difficulties.

“We are beyond grateful for the donation by Canterra Seeds and Northland Seeds. The money from the donation will be going toward some upgrades in our club and help out with some lost revenue after being shut down due to COVID-19,” he said.

Planned upgrades for the facility include an elevator/chair lift to increase accessibility to the viewing area, insulated doors to increase energy efficiency, live streaming equipment to broadcast the many Provincial qualifying events they host and high-performance equipment for practicing provincial and national teams, among others.

To celebrate 25 years in the seed business, Canterra Seeds launched the Rooted in the Prairies Project in March 2021, with the goal to award ten $2,500 donations to local causes nominated by seed grower shareholders and farmers throughout Western Canada. Johnson’s company, Northland Seeds, matched the donation from Canterra Seeds, bringing the total amount donated to $5,000.

The project was launched to commemorate their 25th anniversary to give back to those that helped build Canterra Seeds into what it is today. Northland Seeds nominated Wadena RE/MAX Curling Club for the Rooted in the Prairies Project, and this entry was chosen for the $2,500 donation in their Northeastern Saskatchewan territory.

All winners from the Rooted in the Prairies Project will be featured on the Canterra Seeds Behind the Seeds blog. For more information about their silver anniversary celebration and company history, you can visit their website.

The Quill Plains Chevrolet Premier League kicked off their season to commemorate the evening even more as Jayden Bindig of Lakeside Agro defeated Brian Nelson of Wadena Drugs/Wadena Co-op, Delores Syrota defeated Greg Harcourt of RJ Sales and Service, Scott Comfort of Kenzie Seeds/RE/MAX BCR defeated Dwight Pomedli of Pomedli Farms and Cory Carter of Schulte Industries defeated Garry Leach of Brendonn Holdings/Kenzie Seeds.
