Mustangs snap streak, Curtis kills it in win over Red Wings

The Melfort Mustangs got back in the win column in decisive fashion on Friday, Oct. 29.

It was a 7-1 final score at the Northern Lights Palace as the Mustangs dominated the Weyburn Red Wings, snapping a three game losing streak.

“This was obviously huge coming off three losses in a row,” said Mustang forward Trenton Curtis. “This just means we’re heading in the right path and hopefully tomorrow we can get another one.”

It was also Curtis’ return from injury as he missed the last seven straight games. It looked like Curtis didn’t miss a beat though as the 19-year-old scored twice and added an assist in the win.

Curtis said it was a great effort and it felt great to to be back with the team and contributing.

“I thought I was playing with two good teammates in Boston Maxwell and Logan Cox,” he said. “Puck was able to find me on my stick and I was able to put two of them in.”

Drew Kuzma scored 5:49 into the hockey game for Weyburn, but from that point forward, it was all Melfort Mustangs. Melfort outshot Weyburn 39-14 in the game and was also 4/5 on the powerplay.

Seth McCulloch scored twice as well while Maxwell, Curtis Hammond, and Marco Lopez all scored as well in the victory.

The competition doesn’t get any easier for the Mustangs on Saturday, Oct. 30 as the fifth place Battlefords North Stars stop in at the Palace. Puck drop is at 7:30.
