Winning streak continues as Broncos hit the road

An early week game at the Elgar Petersen Arena will be the last Humboldt sees of the Broncos for a while.

The hometown team will now be hitting the road for a five-game run, first heading down south to take on the Weyburn Red Wings once and the Estevan Bruins for a two-game contest before heading north to take on the Ice Wolves in two games.

Broncos head coach Scott Barney told northeastNOW Estevan will be a challenge.

“They’re going to be a top team in this league so we’re just going to get ready to go and if you want to win you got to be able to win on the road,” he said.

The Broncos are keeping their winning streak alive going into the away games stretch with a 2-1 win over the Kindersley Klippers on Nov. 2.

Kindersley struck first with an early goal midway through the first. Both teams fought hard but the Broncos would tie it up just seconds into the third with a goal from current SJHL lead scorer Logan Kurki with assistance from Kade Olsen and Connor McGrath.

Even with a man advantage in overtime, the Broncos would not be able to find the winning goal before going into a shootout.

Cage Newans and Matthew Perkins would find the back of the net for the Broncos and Rayce Ramsay held the Klippers to one goal for the win.

For Ramsay, he’s prepared for the shootout pressure.

“You just have to treat it like you know any other shot, you know like it’s about consistency. You know, we do shootouts in practice too. So I prepared my practice like I will in a game and when I prepare there, it executes on the ice,” Ramsay said.

While the Broncos outshot the Klippers 34-24, Barney gives a lot of credit to Klippers’ goalie Matthew Pesenti who took home first star of the game.

“We’re just trying to get as much traffic as we could…We’re big believers on lots of shots towards the net and not turning down opportunities to shoot the puck and I think we’ve got to get those second-chance opportunities and put them in for sure,” Barney said.

Perkins has been one of the Broncos who have been taking those opportunities with four goals last week, including a hat-trick and an overtime winner, and one of the two shootout goals against the Klippers.

The 2004 born rookie took home the SJHL’s DirectWest Rookie of the Week honours this past week for his efforts.

The Broncos also announced a midseason trade with Justin Keck being traded to the Manitoba Junior Hockey League Swan Valley Stampeders in exchange for a player development fee.

Keck played two seasons with the Broncos, including the shortened 2020-2021 season. In 10 games this season, Keck had one assist.

The Broncos will be back at the EPA on Nov. 17 to take on the Notre Dame Hounds.
