Biggest Win of the Year... So Far?

Mustangs earn massive win over Bombers ahead of week-long break

Nov 4, 2021 | 9:28 AM

Wednesday marked the second time in three nights that the Melfort Mustangs scored seven goals in an SJHL game.

This time, it was a 7-3 win over the Flin Flon Bombers at the Northern Lights Palace.

Mustang forward Boston Maxwell scored in the contest and added a couple of assists. He said after losing four of their last five, this was a big response against one of the league’s best teams.

“It’s always a big one when you turn things around,” he said. “And I think it’s definitely one of the biggest wins of the year for us.”

Ty Albrecht scored the first goal of the game for Melfort before the Bombers tied it, but after that, the Mustangs wouldn’t give up the lead.

Seth McCulloch, Curtis Hammond, Ben Tkachuk, Tye Evans, Tye Scherger, and Maxwell all scored in the contest.

The Mustangs even started the game with five natural defencemen, instead of the normal six, lost a blueliner partway through the game, and still managed to limit the Bombers in the contest.

“Everybody knew what they had to do,” Maxwell said. “They took on their roles, and when guys had to move around, they accepted that and went out there and did their best. So, I think it’s just a matter of putting our best foot forward and that will always get us our best result.”

The Mustangs were also 5-8 on the powerplay in the contest, while the Bombers were 1-3 on the man advantage.

Melfort will now be off for a week before a Nov. 10 meeting against the La Ronge Ice Wolves at the Northern Lights Palace.
