Getting Married In Love

Saskatchewan Village gives new meaning to love and marriage

The Village of Love Saskatchewan is getting a new wedding chapel for those who are looking to tie the knot.

For couples, this fairytale is born out of the labour of Love.

Shelley Campbell Vallier, Mayor of Love, said this project has been a dream for quite some time.

“We decided back in 2018 that we were going to start putting money away for the chapel from our fundraisers but of course, due to COVID, it stopped us from having those.”

Although fundraisers were put on the back burner, they held a 50/50 raffle in the summer of 2021 that raised over $10,000.

“We have had a couple of other big donations to help us out so that’s helping us get done things quickly,” said Vallier.

Originally, the chapel was the old bunkhouse in Choiceland. Since being relocated to Love, the chapel needs tender loving care.

“It has three bedrooms, living room, kitchen, so we have to take down a bunch of walls in there and open it up,” Vallier added. “The floors in there are fir floors original to the building, so we are hoping to find someone to give us a good deal on sanding on those so we can keep them.”

Couples hoping for a rustic wedding are in luck as the repairs are revealing hidden gems.

“We are tearing gyprock down and found underneath it the original shiplap. So we hope to keep that shiplap for the walls.”

The Village of Love is seeking donations of windows, doors, but more importantly, a designer who can help the building be ready for blushing brides and golden grooms.

There is no shortage of weddings in the village of Love, as couples make the journey to get married in the place that captures their feelings.

“We have had weddings in front of our post office, in our park, at the hall during our Love winter festival,” Vallier explained. “The one we did at the winter festival, I am not sure the name of the town now but it was a five-and-a-half-hour drive. They came specifically to get married in the village of love.”

As a result of the COVID pandemic, Love has only seen two weddings in 2021.

The big day will be coming soon for love-struck couples.

“Depending on how much we can get done before the snow flies. We are hoping to have it running by next summer.”

The building already has a waiting list, so lovebirds hoping to become the building’s first couple will have to get in line.

“We have already got at least half a dozen people who want to be the first ones to be married in there. So we are not sure how we’re going to handle that one yet.”

Those wanting to donate, have questions or are simply in love with the idea can visit Love and District Recreation Committee on Facebook.
