Wynyard pool upgrades will put swimmers in the fast lane

Swimming pool lifeguards and the Wynyard Kinsmen have partnered up to assist with purchasing new lane ropes for the pool.

On Nov. 2, the Kinsmen presented a cheque to the Wynyard Pool alongside the brand new lane ropes.

Sigourney Anderson, Wynyard’s Director of Leisure Services, said the pool was closed in 2020 for upgrades.

“We used the money we would have used running the pool to do a few upgrades. One of those upgrades was we uncovered and re-installed the lane rope hooks in the pool.”

The pool ropes themselves were not part of the upgrades done but the pool staff took it among themselves to raise the money through raffles, burger sales, and pancake sales with help from the Wynyard Kinsmen.

“They were able to raise $3,000 and then the Wynyard Kinsmen donated the other $3,500 to pay for the 4 lane ropes and reels.”

Swimming enthusiasts eager to get back in the pool will be thrilled to know that the hard work of the lifeguard club and the Kinsmen will finally be showcased in 2022.

“We have these great lane ropes that we will get to use next year. They didn’t arrive until mid-September so we didn’t get to use them this pool season.”

The pool’s main priority, according to Anderson, is to go on taking care of and improving the pool for generations to come.

“We are going to open again. We are going to do some more concrete deck work.”

Wynyard Swimming Pool, a heated junior Olympic sized pool, boasts two diving boards and four lanes.

The new ropes will now separate the four lanes for those training or wishing to practice the sport.
