Melfort Invitational

Comets feeling good ahead of Regionals in La Ronge

The Melfort Comets hosted their annual Melfort Invitational Volleyball Tournament this past weekend, Nov. 5 and 6, in what was the first volleyball tournament held in Melfort in the last two years.

The tournament served as a sort of last practice and tuneup, for the three Melfort teams, as regionals will be held this weekend in La Ronge, with provincials being held the following weekend in Moosomin.

Although no Melfort team medalled in the event, with JP2 beating Martensville in the gold and Meadow Lake beating Humboldt for bronze, head coach Lane Gerwing said he is happy with how his team played this past weekend and is confident in their chances at regionals.

“We played really well, it’s the first time we’ve had this lineup going, we’ve been missing some players and kind of just got everyone back. We lost to Meadow in the crossover and they’re a really strong team.”

“We’re feeling really good, we actually played a few of the teams that will be at regionals and we split with them, so it shows we can play with them, I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens at regionals. We have to play well to win, but we showed we can play with those teams, so I guess we’ll see how it goes.”

Gerwing also said he knows his team can be better than they were this past weekend and knows what they have to work on. He also mentioned how nice it was to play at home, however, how that may have affected some nerves.

“Our serving definitely wasn’t as strong this weekend as it has been previously, I think there was a little more pressure and stress playing at home with so many supporters. We missed a few more of those serves than we are accustomed to, so that didn’t help. Hopefully, we can take that out of our game and play with a bit more confidence and then the rest takes care of itself.”

“It was amazing to play at home, I think everyone was pleasantly surprised at how many people came out to show their support, the stands were just packed, the atmosphere was awesome and I think there were just so many people that were happy to have a volleyball tournament in town again.”

Gerwing also mentioned that he knows his team will be better heading into regionals, as all three Melfort teams that competed in the invitational, will now be constructed into one.

“It makes us better, we’ll have that big bench and we’ll have lots of girls there supporting the ones on the court. The more positive support you have around you the better, if you have that much more teammates in your corner, showing their support, it can really make a difference. Also sometimes, you never know with injuries or people having a bit of an off game, you can have one of those girls go in, in a tight game and it can have a really big impact on your team’s success. I think that can really help us.”
