A storm is brewing

Melfort Storm Volleyball Club to return after pandemic hiatus

Nov 10, 2021 | 4:18 PM

The Melfort Storm Volleyball Club is back this weekend as Nov. 14 and 21 mark their two tryout dates.

As high school volleyball is on the verge of ending, the Club will begin its season shortly after, starting on Dec. 9.

After nearly two years off the court, President of the Melfort Storm Volleyball Club Dave Klenk said he and the athletes alike are very excited to once again have a season.

“We’re very excited, I didn’t know what was going to happen after COVID,” he said. “I’m very happy we have 40 girls registered at the moment. I think they’re excited too, I’ve talked to the parents and it seems like they’re fired up and ready to go.”

And not only is the excitement still there, after the long break, but it seems to be growing, as they currently have enough registered for three teams, which is one bigger than they had in 2019, prior to the COVID shutdown.

“We definitely want to build the club for the future for sure,” Klenk said. “We just want to get as many kids involved and play some ball. There are lots of kids from out of town and the surrounding area, so that’s good to see too, we’re not just the Melfort Storm Volleyball Club.”

According to Klenk, it’s not just athletes they need to build the Club, it’s coaches as well.

“The year before COVID, we had two teams, this year we’re hoping for three, so we’re trying to build a bigger club every year. The problem we have, however, is coaches, we’re always short coaches. We actually only have two right now, so we need to find another one if we’re going to have three teams,” he said.

And having three teams is important to Klenk, as he wants to provide the opportunity to anyone who wants it, to have the chance to play volleyball all throughout the winter and build your skills to become the best you can be.

“If it works out the way we hope, we won’t have to cut anybody. The big thing is giving everybody the opportunity to play and we certainly don’t want to discourage anyone from playing, we want them all to have some fun,” Klenk said.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of interest and participation numbers from boys in the area, Klenk mentioned that there won’t be any boys teams like there had been in previous years, however, he hopes that isn’t the same case next year.
