Shutout in Flin Flon

Rough second period hurts Mustangs in loss to Bombers

Nov 13, 2021 | 8:58 AM

It was a ten-minute stretch on Friday that sunk the Melfort Mustangs in SJHL action against the Flin Flon Bombers.

Melfort fell 5-0 in the contest and it all started with a Bomber powerplay goal from Nathan Gagne at the 9:50 mark of the second period to open the scoring.

“We’ve got to come out with a good clean shift right after that and get some momentum going our way,” said assistant coach Trevor Logan. “I think the mood was still good on the bench.”

However, just 12 seconds after that goal, Mason Kaspick added one for the Bombers, and things kind of fell apart from there. Zak Smith would add two more for the Bombers in that period and they would add an empty netter in the third.

Logan said they need to be able to bounce back after moments like the first two goals.

“You’re going to get scored on in games, that happens every night just about,” he said. “So, when you get scored on like that, you’ve got to be able to respond and bounce back, because up to that point we were playing a pretty good road game.”

Cal Schell stopped 30 shots for the Bombers in the win. On the other side, Joel Favreau was pulled for the Mustangs after the fourth goal in the second period, making way for James Venne. He stopped all 14 shots he saw in relief.

The Mustangs get to jump back in the saddle on Saturday, Nov. 13 as they are back at home to the Yorkton Terriers. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m.
