Venne earns first career SJHL shutout in Mutangs in over Terriers

The Melfort Mustangs broke a mini two-game losing streak on Saturday, Nov. 13 as they defeated the Yorkton Terriers 2-0 at the Northern Lights Palace.

17-year-old netminder James Venne stopped 17 shots for his first career shutout in the SJHL. He said it was an all-around effort.

“Incredible feeling, great team game today,” he said. “Can’t thank the boys enough for that one.”

Venne’s shutout wasn’t the only first career mark for a Mustang on this night as Leyton Holoien earned his first career SJHL goal as he opened the scoring midway through the first period with a nice wrist shot from the blue line. The Mustangs held on defensively for the rest of the game, only giving up the 17 shots. Venne said the team was excellent in front of him.

“They locked it down pretty well in front of me, so I didn’t have to do much,” Venne said.

Ben Tkachuk scored the insurance marker for the Mustangs less than a minute into the third period, and the rest is history as the Mustangs improve their record to 12-7-1-1.

Next action for the Mustangs will be Saturday, Nov. 20 as they take on the very same Yorkton Terriers, but this time in Yorkton.
