Comets escape La Ronge with provincial berth, finish third at regionals

The Melfort Comets girl’s volleyball team made sure to make the last game at regionals suspenseful, as they beat Nipawin in straight sets and took home the third and final spot for a birth at the upcoming provincials in Moosomin.

Although it would’ve just been suspenseful for the athletes and coaches, as no spectators were allowed in La Ronge this past weekend, the Comets made sure they won bronze to secure one more week in their volleyball season.

Head coach Lane Gerwing told northeastnow although losing the chance at playing for gold wasn’t option A, it was nice to finish strong, especially with what’s still ahead.

“We didn’t play well in the first crossover, so we ended up having to play in the bronze, but then they played really well when it mattered and we took Nipawin two straight. Pretty handedly, which was nice. Kind of ends on the right foot and trajectory for provincials.”

Gerwing also said that regardless of the eventual results of this coming weekend, he is proud of where his team has gotten and knows that there is only so much in their hands.

“I think we just feel good about getting another weekend of volleyball, that was our goal at regionals; can we get to provincials, can we get another weekend? Now that we’re going, I think the goal is to just play the best you can and you got to be happy with that.”

“I wouldn’t necessarily say we’re medal favourites, but I would say in high school sports, anything can happen. If we go there and play well, you never know what can happen.”

Gerwing also mentioned that he is ecstatic for the Grade 12’s who finally get their chance to shine.

“I think for the Grade 12’s especially, in Grade 10 they weren’t in as big of roles and last year there weren’t provincials, so getting that experience again, I think is huge for them. I’m happy they get this opportunity.”

Gerwing said that one thing is for certain, however, no matter the result, this is an experience that many will remember for the better and that there is only one thing that truly matters.

“I think when you’re there, you just want to play your best. We want to keep the focus on what we can do and what we can control. If we play really well, of course, we like our chances. We’re looking forward to it and hopefully, we play well and the rest takes care of itself.”
