Broncos welcomed home with shootout win against Hawks

Nov 21, 2021 | 8:48 PM

After five games and two weeks on the road, the Broncos were back on home ice for a game against the Nipawin Hawks on Saturday.

After a successful week against La Ronge and earning the SJHL Defenseman of the Week, Humboldt defenseman Noah Barlage was happy to be back at home playing in front of the home fans with 940 people in attendance.

“It’s good to have our hometown crowd cheering us on and all the fans.”

Barlage would be the first to light up the score clock against the Hawks with help from Logan Kurki and Connor McGrath early in the first period. Nipawin would answer back with a goal from Joel Mabin. That would be the name of the game as both teams would score in the second; one from Humboldt forward Lucas Ceccarelli with help from Barlage and Braiden Koran and another from Nipawin’s Alex Johnson, to go into the third tied at two goals a piece.

After an uneventful third and five minute overtime, the Broncos would have the upper hand in the shootout to take the win thanks to two goals from Matthew Perkins and Cage Newans.

Head coach Scott Barney commended the Hawks for a good game in Humboldt, however the Broncos need to play past the first 20 minutes.

“The last 40 wasn’t great and that’s a credit I think to Nipawin. They played a great game. obviously entertaining for the fans, but you know, good teams find a way to win. That’s important too.”

The Broncos had little time to rest as they were on the road the next night to take on the Notre Dame Hounds on their home ice.

It would once again be a high scoring game for the Broncos with a 5-1 win on the road, with Alec Saretzky scoring his 15th and 16th season goals, as well as Ceccarelli, Newans and Koran as adding to their point totals.

After two nights in goal, Humboldt goalie Rayce Ramsay stopped 58 shots, including two during Saturday night’s shootout.

After two wins this past week, the Broncos remain in first place in the Global Ag Risk Solutions

The Broncos lead their division and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with 38 points, four points over second place Estevan and six points over third place Battlefords North Stars.

They do have some tough contests ahead of them with three games at home, including two against the Flin Flon Bombers at the Elgar Petersen Arena (EPA) next weekend.

Barney said it is going to be a great match up with a hard working coaching staff and a great goalie in Cal Schell.

“They played Estevan pretty tight here this weekend, so it’ll be a great matchup here.”

The Broncos will first face the La Ronge Ice Wolves at home on Thursday at the EPA.
