Mustangs fall in shootout to Millionaires

Nov 25, 2021 | 10:21 AM

It was a shootout loss for the Melfort Mustangs on Wednesday as Melfort fell to the Melville Millionaires at the Northern Lights Palace.

Mustang forward Marco Lopez said there were some good things in the lineup, but it wasn’t enough.

“Tonight we just had to be a bit more physical,” he said. “We did some things well, but we’ve got to be better.”

Noah Wills opened the scoring for Melville in the first period, and the Mustangs wouldn’t be able to respond until Marco Lopez scored his eighth of the season at the 5:43 mark of the second period to tie things up. Trenton Curtis was fed on a partial break later in the frame and made no mistake to make it 2-1 Melfort after two.

Nicolas Samson scored early in the third for Melville and forced overtime as neither team could pull ahead in the third.

No team could score in overtime which forced a shootout. Noah Wills scored the lone shootout goal to give Melville the win in the contest.

It was the first game in Mustang colours for new acquisitions Mark Snarr and Nolan Doell, but Lopez said the loss didn’t have anything to do with the new faces.

“I think they fit in right away,” Lopez said. “I thought they looked good. We just have to be better out there, to be honest, we can’t pin it on the new guys coming in or anything like that, they played well. We just have to be better.”

Melfort falls to 13-7-1-2 on the season and are back in action on Friday, Nov. 26 as they visit the Weyburn Red Wings.
