Mustangs looking for more physicality, energy heading into southern road trip

The Melfort Mustangs embark on their second and final southern road swing of the season as they take on the Weyburn Red Wings and Estevan Bruins on Friday and Saturday respectively.

Melfort is coming off a shootout loss to the Melville Millionaires on Wednesday, Nov. 24, and while they earned a point in the contest, the team knows it was not even close to the level they should be at.

Assistant Captain Seth McCulloch said after watching some film, the team feels they need some more physicality and grit, something he said needs to be a major part of his game.

“Coming in my rookie year, that was the way that I had to play to get in the lineup,” McCulloch said. “And I think I need to keep doing that and lead by example for the younger guys for sure this year and hopefully they can just follow in behind.”

Friday’s meeting with the Red Wings will be the third meeting of the year between the two clubs, a matchup the Mustangs have dominated, winning both games by a combined score of 12-1.

“Tons of success against Weyburn,” McCulloch said. “If we go in there, play physical, play our game, we should come out on the right side of that.”

McCulloch said a good performance on Friday will lead into another good performance on Saturday against the Bruins. Melfort won the two teams only meeting of the season back in the middle of October.

Both games this weekend can be heard on 105 CJVR with Mat Barrett. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m. both nights, the pre game shows will start at 7:15 p.m.
