Mustangs fall after wild third period against Bruins

Dec 2, 2021 | 9:45 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have lost their fourth straight contest after a 4-3 loss in regulation to the Estevan Bruins on Wednesday.

Ben Tkachuk scored the lone marker through the first two periods as the Mustangs outshot the Bruins 19-11 through two periods of play.

Forward Trenton Curtis said in the third, they started to get away from their systems.

“I thought the first 40 minutes we carried the play, we were definitely outworking them a lot,” he said. “We thought we had the most chances, and then in the third period, started getting away from our system and took more penalties than we wanted to, and they were able to capitalize.”

Curtis scored twice in the third period for the Mustangs, including the goal to make it 3-3 with less than seven minutes to play in the game.

Curtis said there’s still a bigger picture at play during the Mustangs tough stretch.

“We started this thing up a couple of games ago, best of seven game series,” Curtis said. “Right now we’re down 0-3, but hopefully we have a good next four games and finish off this series.”

James Venne stopped 20 of 24 in the loss for Melfort.

Melfort is back in action on Friday, Dec. 3 for their Teddy Bear Toss game against the Yorkton Terriers.
