Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Humboldt

The City of Humboldt is spreading Christmas cheer by lighting up the Civic Park.

Dec 2 at 7:00 p.m. residents of Humboldt were invited to celebrate the festive season with their annual tree lighting.

Michael Behiel, Mayor of Humboldt, said the city is happy to bring the tradition back to the community.

“The tree lighting was a tradition until about 20 years ago and for some reason, it got put into hiatus,” Behiel told northeastNOW. “In 2019 we brought it back into play because we felt it was a key piece of the community.”

The festival featured Santa ditching the reindeer to show up in another show-stopping way. According to Behiel, this is where the real Christmas magic starts.

“Christmas is about the children and the excitement they saw when Santa showed up on the horse-drawn carriage was absolutely phenomenal and warms the heart.”

The Humboldt Broncos then lead event-goers in singing their favourite Christmas carols.

After singing with their favourite hockey team, attendees were able to go on hayrides to explore the true beauty of Humboldt.

The guest of honour, Father Christmas, then took pictures with families.

“It was sort of a nice little hour or two get together where everyone could come out and relax.”

In the coming years, the city hopes to expand the festival to have more activities. Currently, they are hoping to install a skating surface in the park for the winter months.

Behiel wants to remind everyone this Christmas season to celebrate with the people you care about most.

“Stay safe, remember the true meaning of Christmas, take a minute to think of people who are less fortunate and enjoy the holiday in the purest sense.”
