Wapiti Valley Ski Hill announces its opening date

It’s time to get the skis and snowboards ready; Wapiti Valley Ski & Board Resort is opening soon.

The expected opening date is December 17 but that may change depending on the weather.

Eileen Shaw, manager of Wapiti Valley Ski & Board Resort, said the ski hill is opening later than they anticipated.

“This beautiful weather has just been too nice to make snow so we are waiting for that cold snap to come and hopefully we can finish making the snow.”

The resort will follow all current public health orders in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“We do have to check for double vaccinations to enter the lounge and kitchen room,” Shaw added. “There are no restrictions on the pro shop, a small warm-up room and washrooms. We will have a take out window for people to go out to their vehicles and eat.”

Masks are required at all times while in a building regardless of vaccination status. Those skiing and snowboarding are encouraged to wear a face mask at all times.

While renting equipment and waiting for the chair lift, two metres of social distancing must be observed.

The resort will be offering skiing and snowboarding lessons this year.

Both the student and trainer will be required to wear a face mask.

Shaw said they hope to have a successful season despite the newly added rules.

“There are no restrictions on anything outside, but we will still be encouraging people to keep their distance and ride on the chairlift with the group they came with.”

The resort will be closing on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and will return to regular operating hours on Boxing Day.
