Mustangs set to close out home stand against Red Wings

Dec 7, 2021 | 5:01 PM

The Melfort Mustangs close out a four-game home stand on Wednesday, Dec. 8 as they welcome the Weyburn Red Wings to town.

Melfort is 1-2-0-0 on the home effort, but are coming off a 5-2 win against the Melville Millionaires on Saturday. Mustang forward Trenton Curtis had three assists on the night and has tallied two goals and four assists through the home stand. As a result of his efforts, he was named SJHL Rookie of the Week.

Curtis called it an honour and said now that he’s through some early season injury trouble, things are starting to click.

“Missing quite a few games to start the season, just getting my groove back together,” he said. “And just getting everything back in place.”

The 19-year-old has 15 points in 16 games this season.

The meeting against Weyburn on Wednesday will be the fourth and final meeting of the year between the two clubs. Melfort has won two of three and their only loss came in a shootout on Nov. 26.

“They’ve got a couple quick guys, they know how to hit, and they’re going to pressure us quite a bit down low,” Curtis said. “So, we’ve just got to make smart plays and we’ll be just fine.”

Melfort is currently 14-9-1-4 on the season, good for fifth place in the SJHL. Weyburn is 12th place with a 7-16-3-0 record.
