Late Game Lopez

Lopez scores late to lift Mustangs over Red Wings

Dec 9, 2021 | 10:05 AM

It took a little bit of late game magic, but the Melfort Mustangs defeated the Weyburn Red Wings by a 4-3 score on Wednesday.

The Mustangs dominated the shot clock from puck drop, leading the shots after two periods 29-8, and ultimately 39-23 at the end of the contest. Although while the shot clock was all Melfort, the Mustangs could never pull ahead by more than one goal.

Marco Lopez said that while it wasn’t their best performance on the ice, the team battled for their second straight win.

“I love this group of guys,” Lopez said. “It’s great in the room and everything like that. We’re stringing them together now and I hope we can go for the rest of the year like this.”

Hayden Tuba scored late in the first for Melfort before Kirk Mullen responded for Weyburn before the buzzer. Nolan Doell would give Melfort the lead again in the second but Weyburn responded about five minutes into the third. Curtis Hammond put the Mustangs ahead one more time before the Red Wings tied things up one more time with less than five to play in the game.

Melfort pressed late, and Weyburn would also have their chances, but with seven seconds left in the game, Lopez knocked one past Red Wing netminder Boston Gelowitz to put the Mustangs ahead one last time in the contest.

“We lost a bit of momentum when they tied it up there, so I thought it was huge,” Lopez said. “We had a good shift, all shift we hemmed it in there. It was a good goal, felt great.”

The win improves the Mustangs record to 15-9-1-4, good for 35 points on the season. Melfort will hit the road for contests against Battlefords and Kindersley this weekend.
