Northeast Wolfpack hosting food drive after Prince Albert Foxes’ nomination

Dec 9, 2021 | 6:00 PM

The Northeast Wolfpack U15 AA Hockey team will be hosting a food drive at their next two upcoming home games.

The idea originally came to be after the Prince Albert U15 AA Foxes challenged the Wolfpack to do so after they completed theirs.

Fans can bring either non-perishable food items or a cash donation, with all who donate being entered to win a prize from one of the team’s sponsors.

Rob Wallington, head coach of the Wolfpack told northeastNOW this is a good learning experience for his young hockey club, in giving back to the communities where you live.

“It’s a good thing to teach our players and it’s a good thing that our fans and families can help out with too,” he said. “I’ve been involved with the team for the past three years and this is the first time we’ve done something like this, so it’s good to start.”

And for a team that represents many communities in the area, Wallington said he hopes people from all over will come to the games and help the cause.

“We’re a team that’s from all over northeast Saskatchewan, so if we can pull a little bit from Nipawin, Tisdale, Melfort, Hudson Bay, Birch Hills and Naicam, that would be really good.”

And as Wallington mentioned previously, this is something this team hasn’t done before, so he gives the Foxes’ organization a lot of credit for coming up with the idea and getting his team involved.

“We were surprised a little bit when we first got challenged but good on those young ladies for taking the initiative to start it and then include us,” he said. “I think it’s great by them.”

Wallington also gave credit to the team sponsors who stepped up and got involved and helped to encourage some donations.

“What we’re hoping to do is every item you bring to the rink and donate, your name can go into a draw for a prize box. Some of our major team sponsors gave us a few complimentary gifts that we can give out and reward the people who donated.”

The Wolfpack will play the Warman Wildcats at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort on Friday, Dec. 10, with puck drop at 6:15 p.m. and the Humboldt Broncos at the RECplex in Tisdale on Saturday, Dec. 11, with puck drop at 4:45 p.m.

The Wolfpack have also continued the challenge by nominating four other teams, which include the Southeast Whitecap Goldwings, Lehner Electric Foxes and the Prince Albert Northern Bears.
