The City of Melfort and the Chakastaypasin Cree Nation (CCN) are joining together in the name of truth and reconciliation.

Glenn George, Mayor of Melfort, said that all the city and CCN are excited to see what the future holds.

“Now, we will be able to plan and make things prosperous. We will be working closely with CCN together for our mutual benefit.”

Chief Calvin Sanderson of the Chakastaypasin Band said this memorandum is the first step in creating economic prosperity.

“Our vision is to come and create an urban community here and also economic developments,” Sanderson added. “This is what we are looking towards for our unborn kids and those we have now.”

The two parties are looking forward to helping one another grow.

Todd Goudy, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Melfort, attended the event to represent the Province of Saskatchewan.

Goudy said this event is setting the precedence for continued growth between the two communities.

“Today represents two communities working together to help each other out. It’s great to see two friends sit down and sign this document together.”

Cheif Bobby Cameron was in attendance representing the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN).

Cameron said this partnership marks the beginning of two communities coming together in the name of Truth and Reconciliation.

“The goal in any business sector is for First Nations people to be fully included and involved in areas such as economics, natural resources, education, health, justice, the list goes on and on. There are so many things we can work towards.”
