What's new Melfort

What Melfort residents can look forward to in 2022

As 2022 approaches, the City of Melfort is renewing contracts, supporting local attractions and preparing for the upcoming year.

Heavy vehicles will need to begin to consider a new route into 2022 when travelling through Melfort. Council has instructed the administration to begin with the process of removing the heavy vehicle designation on Broadway Avenue South.

The process is expected to be lengthy but the council is hoping this encourages heavy trucks to consider an alternate route in preparation of the change.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority extended its contact with the Kerry Vickar Centre until the end of March to continue to provide vaccines to northeast residents.

The city has also announced they will be given a $50,000 letter of intent to the Melfort Curling Rink. The city will act as a guarantor for the club to assist with securing an Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) grant.

Councillor Brian Enge said the funding will be going towards much-needed repairs.

“Like a lot of buildings in Melfort, they are ageing and in need of expensive repairs, updates and more efficient systems to continue operations. By doing upgrades they are able to level out their budgets.”

Enge said since the facility is not owned by the city, the letter of intent is important for the grant application to demonstrate community support.

Feb. 13, 2021 was proclaimed as Wear Red Canada Day. The Women’s Heart Health Alliance promotes being proactive, curious and mindful when managing heart health.

The city will be entering into service agreements with Greenland waste, Chem-Aqua and Prairie Controls Ltd. Saskatchewan Association for Resource Recovery Corporation (SARRC) will be renewing their contract for five years to continue to provide safe disposal of hazardous items.

The city council came together to discuss plans for the new year on Dec. 13.
