Lopez continues torrid stretch as Mustangs defeat Hawks

Can anyone stop Marco Lopez?

The Nipawin Hawks couldn’t on Friday as the Melfort Mustang forward notched a hat-trick against their bitter rivals in a 6-1 win.

It was Lopez’s second hat-trick in three games and he’s now tallied eight goals over four games.

“I’m just finding the puck around the net, and it seems to be going in for me right now,” Lopez said. “I feel good out there.”

As for the team, it was scoreless through one, but the Mustangs would make it 3-0 through two periods and didn’t look back as on top of Lopez’s three goals, Carter Anderson, Kevin Minnoch, and Seth McCulloch scored for the Mustangs.

It’s the Mustangs’ sixth win in a row, and Lopez said this team is really finding their groove.

“This stretch we’ve played a lot of our best efforts,” he said. “This was a very good effort, it was a tough battle out there and we came through with flying colours.”

It was just the third meeting of the season between the rival clubs, but also the first of four straight meetings between now and the New Year.

They meet in Nipawin on Saturday. All of the action for that one is on 105 CJVR with Mat Barrett. Pre-game show is at 7:15 p.m., puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.
