Mustangs shutout Hawks, enter Christmas break winners of seven straight

Dec 19, 2021 | 9:14 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are heading into Christmas as the hottest team in the SJHL.

This following a 3-0 win over their rival Nipawin Hawks at the Cage in Nipawin on Saturday, Dec. 18.

After a 6-1 win the night prior in Melfort against the Hawks, Assistant Coach Dan Meyers said they had to adjust to the difficult confines of the Cage.

“Get over the red line, get it deep, work the corners, then put the pucks on net and crash the net,” he said. “The boys listened and it paid off.”

Curtis Hammond opened the scoring for Melfort, his 16th of the season in the second period. That was followed by a third-period insurance marker from Hayden Tuba, and then a Carter Anderson empty netter to make it a 3-0 affair.

James Venne stopped 21 shots in the victory for his second shutout of the season.

“Tonight, the past eight, nine, I don’t even know how many games he’s played in a row,” Meyers added. “But he’s been amazing for a young man.”

It was Venne’s 14th straight start as the Mustangs head into the break alone in third place in the SJHL with a 20-9-1-4 record, good for 45 points.

Melfort is back after the Christmas break on Dec. 31 as they’ll host the same Hawks.
