Humboldt Hospital welcomes 20 new patient beds

The Humboldt and District Health Complex has welcomed 20 new patient beds.

A donation of $150,000 from the Humboldt Good Neighbour Store (GNS) to the Humboldt and District Hospital Foundation (HDHF) in December made the $176,000 purchase possible.

HDHF executive director Lorrie Bunko said the purchase is part of working to provide exceptional health care close to home.

“This is a historic purchase for our hospital and one that we are very proud to be a part of,” Bunko said. “This once again shows the impact of continued monetary support from donors over the years.”

The 20 beds were on the 2022-2023 priority equipment list to replace the current patient beds over three years. The plan was to fund 10 beds per year but when the foundation board got the first submission request, the price per bed was much lower than expected.

Special pricing for a limited time per bed was $4,000. The reduced price resulted in a savings of $80,000 by purchasing all 20 at once. The donation from the GNS in the bank made the new beds became a reality.

“Given the current replacement schedule and plan, it didn’t take much discussion for the board to agree to the purchase. We felt that the savings potential was too much to not take advantage of the opportunity. Every dollar we can save allows us to purchase that much more equipment and keeps us moving towards our goals”, said board chair Aaron Behiel.

The new beds will replace the existing beds that were purchased from 2005 to 2008. The existing beds that still have lifetime use will be moved to other facilities such as Watrous and Lanigan.

The beds that do not have lifetime use will be taken out of commission.
