Rotarians in Melfort are going the distance by walking across Saskatchewan

Jan 14, 2022 | 9:46 AM

Melfort Rotary Club is running, cycling, snowshoeing, skiing and swimming into the new year.

Jan. 1 marked the first day of the latest challenge taken on by the club. The 75-day challenge encourages Rotarians to get physical to help walk the distance of Saskatchewan.

Gailmarie Anderson, Chair of Public Relations, said the Melfort Rotary Road Runners are starting strong.

“We have already done quite a bit in our two weeks. We covered the distance from Prince Albert to Saskatoon.”

The Road Runners report contributions to the total distance every Saturday. All clubs and individual Rotarians participating will continue with physical activity until March 16, the 75th day.

Clubs will be able to go the distance from Prince Albert to Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw, Estevan, Weyburn, Yorkton and back up to Hudson Bay.

All donations are gratefully accepted, and those who give more than $25 will receive a tax-deductible receipt. (Submitted Photo/Gailmarie Anderson)

The rotary district covers Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northwest Ontario. All participants have pledged a certain number of kilometres to ensure the distance goal is achieved across all three provinces.

“When they combined the total kilometres (it) is equal to 4,800 which reaches from Saskatchewan to Saint John’s, N.L.”

In addition to promoting physical activity, funds are being raised to donate to the International Rotary Foundation.

“As we cover the distance we are also asking for sponsorships. The rotary foundation provides the money for our projects,” Anderson explained. “So every project we do in Melfort, the club receives the funding from the foundation.”

The Melfort Club receives funding from the Foundation in support of NEOSS, Habitat for Humanity, and the North Central Health Care Foundation.

Other projects have included sponsoring Melfort Mustang games, Canada Day set up, Salvation Army’s Christmas hampers, and most recently a raffle for gift cards to local restaurants which raised over $6,000.

Those wishing to sponsor the club or an individual may donate any amount, but those who donate over $25 will receive a charitable donation tax receipt.
