Humboldt Chamber of Commerce makes donation to Safe Communities Humboldt

Humboldt & District Chamber of Commerce celebrated the holiday season by donating to a local non-profit.

Thanks to the community enjoying the festival of lights, Safe Communities Humboldt received a donation of $1,000.

Brent Fitzpatrick, executive director, said the chamber wants to recognize all the hard work that non-profits do for the community.

“Every year when we do the festival of lights, our community groups, the non-profits specifically are able to apply for funding.”

The festival began over 10 years ago and has raised over $25,000 to give to charities in the region.

2021 was a challenging year for the event. Local businesses stepped in to make the holidays magical for the community despite the obstacles.

“We had some grinches borrow an entire site of decorations and Northland Recreation Supply came in with additional Christmas decorations and put them up.”

Cold temperatures led to less traffic, resulting in fewer donations collected than in previous years. Although Fitzpatrick said there was a surprise silver lining.

“We had Sean Willy from Des Nedhe speak at one of our luncheons. We always compensate folks but Sean said I don’t need anything just put that money towards good use. So we used that money to top up the amount donated to safe communities.”

Despite the challenges, the event was successful and the chamber is excited for what 2022 holds.

“The event has a very low attrition rate. All of the businesses that were there last year were there this year. Everyone wants to be involved.”

Businesses wanting to get involved with a light display in the 2022-2023 celebration can contact the chamber.

For non-profits hoping to receive the funds raised from the event, the chamber will begin accepting applications in November.

“We usually send out a note through our non-profit organization list and then they can send us a letter applying for the funds.”
