Snowmobiling Safety

Northeast RCMP applaud snowmobilers for driving responsibly

Jan 17, 2022 | 5:00 PM

Despite the frigid temperatures, snowmobilers across the northeast are enjoying fresh trails.

RCMP Combined Traffic Services (CTSS) went on patrol of the trails as part of a three-day traffic enforcement initiative.

CTSS patrolled trails near Hudson Bay from Jan. 7 to 10 in an attempt to catch impaired vehicle operators and other infractions.

Although the RCMP stopped a total of 33 snowmobilers, no infractions were found. All riders were found to be registered and sober.

Cst. Milne with the CTSS said he is glad people are enjoying the trails responsibly despite the cold weather.

“Honestly, given the temperatures, it’s 33 more snowmobilers than I anticipated seeing out there.”

The investigation included highway patrol in and around Hudson Bay, Kelvington, Tisdale, Porcupine Plain and Archerwill.

Nineteen charges were laid under the Traffic Safety Act and the Vehicle Enforcement Regulation. An additional 42 warnings and four inspection tickets were given out.

Those who suspect there is an impaired driver are encouraged to call 911.

The RCMP listed on their website the following as potential signs of impaired driving:

  • swerving
  • strange or erratic movements
  • quick changes in speed
  • speeding or driving very slowly
  • drivers who look groggy or like they’re falling asleep

Before calling the emergency numbers, pull over and make note of the following if it is safe to do so:

  • license plate number
  • make and model of the vehicle
  • description of the driver
  • location of the vehicle and direction of travel

Those wanting to make an anonymous tip about vehicle infractions and those operating snowmobiles without registration can submit a tip through Crime Stoppers.
