How to keep yourself safe from property crime

Nipawin RCMP is sharing tips on how to prevent mischief, theft and break-ins.

With temperatures fluctuating, the detachment has noticed residents report more property crimes when things start to warm up.

Staff Sargent Terry Posnikoff at the Nipawin and Smeaton RCMP detachments said the spike in crime is attributed to cabin fever.

“Typically property crime is done by foot, they are opportunists. So if a vehicle is left unlocked or valuables are left out in the open they become a target. It is the same for outbuildings like garages and sheds.”

Posnikoff explained that although there is a fear that the perpetrator will break the victims’ windows, that is typically not the case.

“People are looking for quick grabs and they don’t see something worth value then they wouldn’t even consider breaking your window.”

Vehicle owners are reminded to take their keys and garage door openers indoors with them.

In response to the increase in crime, the RCMP have increased patrol in both urban and industrial areas.

The increased police presence may drive some thieves into hard to spot areas on private properties.

“Light up the shaded area, turn on motion sensor lights. It forces people out of those spots that they would normally stand or hide to scope out your property.”

If you or someone you know becomes the victim of a property crime, Posnikoff wants to remind the public there is nothing too small to report.

“Even if they noticed a door is jimmied open and nothing is stolen, please report it. The patterns of offences could lead us to a certain area or suspect.”

After contacting law enforcement, a police report will be filed and will be under investigation until there is a resolution. RCMP will provide victim services and support to those who report crimes.

Residents who notice their car, home or outbuildings have been broken into should call the local detachment immediately. Do not disrupt the scene by touching or cleaning the area while waiting for officers to collect evidence.

For those who may have information about a property crime, you can reach out anonymously to Crime Stoppers. Nipawin RCMP also offers anonymity for those reporting crimes and tips directly to them.

“The partnership with the community is of paramount importance. People reporting these tips to solve more crime than they realize. It’s a valuable tool for us being in partnership with the people to have their ear to the ground.”
