Mustangs earn SJHL honours in weekend tilt with Humboldt

Jan 19, 2022 | 6:10 PM

The Melfort Mustangs were back in action last weekend in what was their first games in nearly two weeks.

Melfort won one and lost one in the series split against the Humboldt Broncos, which even saw part of a game being replayed.

Two Mustangs especially were vital parts in helping the club extend their ten-game win streak before it was snapped right after the fact and leaving Humboldt with two of a potential four points.

Nolan Doell, who returned to Melfort’s lineup after just over a month away due to injury, made his presence felt quite quickly as he scored all four of his points in the first game (a 5-2 win for the Stangs).

Doell had an assist on the first two goals for Melfort (and the game), which gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead after the second period. He then sealed the game for Melfort with back-to-back goals in the final eight minutes of the game, giving the Mustangs some breathing room with the fourth and fifth goals respectively.

His quick return to the ice, which helped his team achieve their tenth straight victory, also earned him the RBC Forward of the Week, handed out by the SJHL.

His teammate and linemate, Marco Lopez, was also a huge part of the Mustangs this past weekend, netting one goal, along with four helpers. With five points in two games, Lopez achieved runner-up for the SGEU MVP of the Week.

Lopez, who is currently riding a nine-game point streak, with 19 points in that span, which includes nine goals, also assisted on the first two goals of the game, just like Doell.

He then had three points the next night, giving him five in two games, assisting on the first goal of the game, which gave the Mustangs the 1-0 lead, then scoring Melfort’s second goal of the game, which gave them a 2-1 lead early in the second and finally, assisting on Melfort’s first goal of the third period, which gave them a 4-3 lead at the time.

The Mustangs are back in action this week with three games on the docket. Game one goes tonight, Jan. 19, against the Estevan Bruins which will see the second and third-place teams in the SJHL face-off against each other for the final time this regular season.

Puck drop is at 7:30 at the Northern Lights Palace.
