Start a New Streak

Mustangs set for final regular season meeting with Bruins

Jan 19, 2022 | 9:39 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are looking to start a new win streak on Wednesday, Jan. 19 as they host the Estevan Bruins.

The Mustangs had their 10 game win streak snapped on Saturday, Jan. 15 after falling to the Humboldt Broncos.

While the Mustang streak came to an end, Marco Lopez’s point streak remains as the 20-year-old has a nine game point streak heading into Wednesday. He’s scored 19 points over the streak, including nine goals.

“Feeling good on the ice right now, the puck seems to be finding me in the right places,” Lopez said. “It’s been good.”

Meanwhile, the test for the Mustangs to start a new streak won’t get much easier as they take on the second-place Bruins, a team they’ve had some tight contests with throughout the year. All three games have been decided by one goal, and one of the three games have gone to a shootout.

The Mustangs took the first meeting by a 5-4 score, followed by a 5-4 shootout loss just over a month later. Both of those contests were in Estevan. Then it was the Bruins spoiling home ice for the Mustangs just over a month ago in a 4-3 decision.

Lopez said the fourth and final matchup against Estevan will be a battle.

“They’re a good team in our league, they got some big guys and some guys that can score,” he said. “We just got to shut them down and play our game out there.”

Estevan is coming off a 2-1 shootout win over Nipawin on Tuesday night and sit with a record of 26-7-1-2, good for second in the SJHL. Melfort is right behind the Bruins with a 23-10-1-4 record in third place.

Puck drop at the Northern Lights Palace on Wednesday is 7:30 p.m.
