Mustangs lose heartbreaker on home ice to Bombers

Jan 22, 2022 | 9:07 AM

The Melfort Mustangs felt like they deserved a better fate on Friday as they fell 3-2 in overtime to the Flin Flon Bombers.

Wyatt Day scored the opening goal for Melfort just 39 seconds into the hockey game to start the back and forth contest. Jaeden Mercier scored for Flin Flon a few minutes later before Carter Anderson scored to make it 2-1 later in the first.

Xavier Lapointe tied the game in the second period, and things remained deadlocked from that point.

Melfort outshot Flin Flon 14-6 in the third period, but could not seem to get one passed Cal Schell.

“We hit a couple cross bars and it could’ve went either way,” Day said. “It’s a tough one but we’ve got to come back and go to Flin Flon tomorrow.”

Overtime saw a couple of excellent chances for both clubs, but it was ultimately Rylan Thiessen that won it for the Bombers about halfway through the extra frame.

Day said with now their third loss in a row, frustration is building, but mainly due to the fact that they played well enough to win on Friday night.

“The momentum just carries from this game because we didn’t play all that bad,” he said.

The Mustangs will head to Flin Flon to battle the Bombers on Saturday.
