Provincial Snowmobile Festival postponed to 2023 in Nipawin

Jan 25, 2022 | 3:10 PM

The 2022 provincial snowmobile festival has been postponed due to concerns surrounding COVID-19.

The festival was to take place this year in Nipawin on Feb. 25 and 26.

Brenda Lehmann with the Twin Lakes Trail Blazers told northeastNOW the festival will be moved to 2023.

“The decision to postpone was difficult as we have great snow conditions this year, an enthusiastic committee who was working extremely hard to showcase our beautiful area and provide some great Nipawin hospitality,” Lehmann said. “However, with the current pandemic situation the decision to postpone was the correct decision.”

The event typically draws snowmobilers from clubs across Saskatchewan, as well as Manitoba and Alberta. A cap of 250 was being put on registrations this year to keep everyone as safe as possible, the event has the potential to bring over 300 sledders to Nipawin.

“The economic benefit to our region through accommodation, gas and food is substantial,” Lehmann said. “We look forward for the ability to host a large, fun packed weekend in 2023.”

Similar to other non-profits, the Twin Lakes Trail Blazers has struggled to bring in funds to keep operating over the past few years.

New grooming equipment is needed but comes with a price tag between $200,000 and $300,000.

According to Lehmann, all clubs receive a portion of the Saskatchewan Government Insurance Snowmobile Registration funds, but those funds primarily cover the club operating costs for the season.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Twin Lakes Trail Blazers missed a full year of fundraising. The two main fundraisers for the club are the Vintage Drag Races and Fish for Freedom Fishing Tournament.

Instead, the club is selling tickets on a Polaris youth side by side until Feb. 26 which is when the draw will be made. Tickets can be purchased by visiting the Twin Lakes Trail Blazers website.
