Mustangs set for weekend home stand against Hounds and Hawks

Jan 28, 2022 | 9:52 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are in the midst of a five game losing streak as they open the weekend on home ice.

The Mustangs host the Notre Dame Hounds Friday, followed by a Saturday night duel with their rival Nipawin Hawks.

In Melfort’s five losses, all but one has been a one goal margin. Mustang Forward Dawson Leroux said they need to look at the good things they’ve done in those games.

“Trying to stay positive,” he said. “Looking to get back at it this weekend and get on a little bit of a streak.”

Leroux said the key to getting back to playing the brand of hockey that saw the team win 10 games in a row is simple.

“It starts with hard work,” Leroux said. “And just keeping things simple to start and building off of little, good things and going from their.”

Heading into the weekend, the Notre Dame Hounds have lost their last three games and have only won two of their last 10 games, although they were interrupted just over a week ago because of COVID-19. Meanwhile, the Nipawin Hawks have only won one game over their last 10 and are six points back of the eighth and final playoff spot in the SJHL.

Game time at the Northern Lights Palace is 7:30 p.m. on both nights.
