Hammond heats up for five as Mustangs down Hounds in overtime

Jan 29, 2022 | 10:50 AM

Curtis Hammond certainly wasn’t letting the Mustangs lose their sixth straight SJHL contest on Friday, Jan. 28.

The 20-year-old forward scored five goals including the overtime winner as the Mustangs defeated the Notre Dame Hounds 7-6 in the extra frame. He said he’s never scored that many in a game that he can remember.

“After the last couple of games we had a little tough go,” Hammond said. “We all came in as a team today knowing we had to be harder and had to be stronger, and I think the pucks were just going our way and I was just finding the back of the net and going to the net hard so I think that’s where they came.”

Hammond opened the scoring for Melfort just over a minute into the hockey game and didn’t stop from that point forward. Clarke Huxley and Zac Somers also scored in the first period while Kevin Anderson, Nolen Covenrty, and Johno Hoins scored for Notre Dame to leave things at 3-3 after one period.

Hammond scored two more in the second, while Connor Nolan notched one for Notre Dame as things were left at 5-4 through two periods.

Notre Dame would come back and score two in the third to take a 6-5 lead before Hammond tallied his fourth goal of the night almost nine minutes into the period.

That forced overtime, and in the extra frame, Hammond was sprung on a breakaway after taking a penalty but was stopped by Hounds goalie Austin Elliott. Hammond wasn’t stopped on his second breakaway however as his fifth of the night and 21st of the season was the dagger as the Mustangs snapped their five-game losing streak.

“Heading into tomorrow this is amazing for us,” Hammond said. “Brought so much energy to the group. We just want to keep the train rolling heading into playoffs here.”

Melfort will host the Nipawin Hawks in a Saturday night affair at the Palace tonight.
